ASTON CANTLOW

In the Middle Ages the village, which lies three miles north west of Stratford, showed signs of becoming a thriving trading centre and the attractive Guildhall remains. Shakespeare's father, John, married Mary Arden here, for Wilmcote where she lived was then part of the parish. Other place names within its boundaries are Shelfield, Little Alne, Bearley Cross and Pathlow. The name comes from the Cantelupe family, lords of the manor in 1250. The church clock dates from the fourteenth century.
