BISHOP'S ITCHINGTON

The village lies four miles south west of Southam on the road to Kineton. As the name suggests, it belonged in mediaeval times to the Bishops of Lichfield, and the River Itchen is nearby. It was originally known as Upper Itchington. Lower Itchington to the south west was depopulated in 1547. There were limestone quarries in the area providing work for the inhabitants, and limestone is still quarried. Part of the R.A.F. airfield at Gaydon is in this parish. Chadshunt and Gaydon (now a modern parish) were both Chapelries.
