GREAT PACKINGTON

There is no village associated with this parish much of whose area makes up the grounds of Packington Hall and the Old Hall, the latter having been reconstructed in 1679 by Sir Clement Fisher. The former was built in 1693 and came into the family of the Earls of Aylesford when the Second Earl married the heiress of Sir Clement Fisher. It was severely damaged by fire in 1979, but is being repaired. The present Earl is the Lieutenant of the County of the West Midlands which includes parts of the older Midland counties. The church is situated between the two Halls and is about five miles south east of Coleshill. The parish is sometimes known as Packington Magna.
