HAMPTON-IN-ARDEN

Originally this was a large parish in area with Chapelries at Temple Balsall, Knowle and Nuthurst. The two former became parishes in 1679 and 1682. The village is about nine miles south east of the centre of Birmingham and four miles east of Solihull. It is of interest to note that the Victorian Prime Minister, Sir Robert Peel was at one time Lord of the Manor. The present church dates from the reign of Henry II. There are a number of attractive old houses in the village, some dating from the seventeenth century.

There were numerous hamlets in the parish, Hockley Heath, Cheswick Green, Whitlock's End, Diddington, Kinwalsey, Nuthurst (became a parish in 1835), Balsall Common, Dorridge, Tidbury Green, Fulford Heath, Wootton Green.
