MIDDLETON

Middleton is about four and a half miles south west of Tamworth and was recorded in Domesday Book. The church was built in Norman times, but there have been many alterations over the centuries. The name is thought to have been given to indicate the midway position the village occupies between the royal seat at Kingsbury and the royal hunting ground at Sutton Coldfield. Middleton Hall was occupied by the Willoughby family for many generations, and memorials to members of the family are to be found in the church, the earliest being a small brass dated 1407. A very fine brass in the centre of the chancel floor is to Sir Richard Bingham who died in 1476. His wife, Margaret, had inherited the Hall from her first husband, Hugh Willoughby in 1476.
