TEMPLE BALSALL

Originally Temple Balsall was a Chapelry of Hampton-in-Arden, and a Lichfield Peculiar of the Manorial Court. It is situated about six miles north west of Warwick near the main Birmingham to Warwick Road. The manor of Balsall was given to the Order of Knights Templars in the reign of King Stephen. The church was built in 1325 by The Order Of St.John of Jerusalem. and has a fine Norman crypt. Near the church is the attractive Lady Catherine Leveson Hospital, founded in 1677 by a grand-daughter of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. Place names in the parish are Chadwick End, Fen End and Diddington.
