WELLESBOURNE

Wellesbourne Hastings and Wellesbourne Mountford are the names of the two separate villages which make up this parish about six miles south of Warwick. The origin of this separation of what should be one village was the division of the original manor between two mediaeval families of Haestang and de Montfort. The church tower is fifteenth century, but nave and chancel were reconstructed in 1847. There is a fine brass, one of the oldest in the county, to Sir Thomas le Straunge, Constable of Ireland in the reign of Henry VI. There are some picturesque old buildings in both villages. Wellesbourne Hall was the home of the Granville family. It was outside the Stag's Head Inn in 1872 that Joseph Arch put forward his ideas for the formation of a National Farm Workers' Union.

Walton D'Eivile was incorporated in the parish c1633 but disunited in 1842. Registers date from 1843 for the new parish.
